South Dakota
Former United States Attorney Marty J. Jackley was appointed to replace 24/7 Sobriety Program pioneer Larry Long as South Dakota Attorney General. Long resigned his post when he was appointed by the Governor as a Circuit Court Judge. Jackley has expressed his strong support of the 24-7 Program and commitment to improving the way the justice system addresses offenders with alcohol, drug, and mental health issues.
Wyoming
Courtesy of a grant through the Wyoming Department of Transportation, the Wyoming Association of Sheriffs and Chiefs of Police conducted a three-year study on alcohol misuse and crime in ten jurisdictions and involving over 30,000 arrestees. They found that 69 percent of all crimes involved alcohol misuse, and that the percentage of crimes involving alcohol misuse was trending upward. Read the report.

Bureau of Justice Assistance
The BJA provided over $12 million in FY 09 Recovery Act Edward Byrne Memorial grant funding to nine agencies and organizations to support problem-solving courts. Click here for details.
The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration
In December, President Obama and the White House announced the nomination of David L. Strickland to serve as the new administrator for NHTSA. Currently the lead staff person for NHTSA oversight, Strickland is recognized as an expert in vehicle fuel economy, vehicle safety, and driver behavior factors. A coalition of criminal justice and highway safety groups, including NPAMC, the National Association of Drug Court Professionals, The Century Council, the National District Attorneys Association, the American Probation and Parole Association, and the National Association of Prosecutor Coordinators released a statement applauding the nomination.
