A new report by the California Department of Corrections and Rehabilitation Division of Addiction and Recovery documents the value of in-prison and in-community treatment. Researchers found that the return-to-prison rate for men who completed both in-prison and community-based substance abuse treatment in FY 2005-06 was significantly lower than the rate for all male offenders (25.4 percent versus 41.2 percent after one year and 40.4 percent versus 55.6 percent after two years.) For women, the results were even more impressive (8.8 percent versus 30.1 percent and 16.5 percent versus 43.7 percent). Unfortunately, despite the results, the state may cut up to $250 million for prison based treatment programs because of the state’s budget problems.
