Meeting Milestones
Despite NPAMC’s short history, our organization has achieved three important and unprecedented milestones since our first meeting on September 24, 2008:
- Brought together almost all major stakeholders from the Federal agencies, non-profit associations, and private industry
- Scientists
- Researchers
- Justice professionals
- Victims groups
- Treatment professionals
- Correctional industry/monitoring companies
- Pharmaceutical companies
- Alcohol industry
- Insurance industry
- Policy experts
- Generated consensus statements representing the “sense of the group” participating in the first meeting
- Developed mechanisms to test, implement, integrate, and evaluate consensus based best practices
- South Dakota Attorney General Larry Long, who conceived of and administers the nation’s only comprehensive statewide 24/7 Sobriety Project, has agreed to work with NPAMC to incorporate best practices into his program and evaluate outcomes. The state Department of Corrections, the Department of Human Services, and the Unified Judicial System have agreed to participate in the process, as have the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, National Institute on Alcohol Abuse and Alcoholism, National Institute on Drug Abuse, and the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration.
- Judge Kent Lawrence, who presides over one of the National Association of Drug Court Professionals’ Academy DWI Courts in Clarke County Georgia, also has agreed to integrate consensus-based solutions into his program, as appropriate.
